Students enrolled in Dance at Maples Collegiate learn a variety of dance styles, but the primary focus is on jazz dance. Jazz dance is an umbrella term that can refer to several related dance styles, including modern, jazz, lyrical, musical theatre, funk, and hip hop, most of which you will see performed tonight.
These performances, however, only make up part of the Maples dance course. In addition to learning and performing choreography, students study dance theory, they learn classical ballet barre exercises, they master movements that travel across the floor, and they explore their own creativity within the context of student choreography projects. The Grade 11 and 12 dancers will be presenting their student choreography projects for you this evening.
This performance was recorded on January 17, 2013 at Maples Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
